THE MiniMISS SPEECH SYNTHESIS SYSTEM

MiniMISS is a speech synthesis system designed to produce high quality synthesized speech at a number of remote locations under control from a single central computer. The core of the MiniMISS system is a new speech synthesis machine, inexpensive enough to be produced in quantity, which is placed at the remote location. It decodes a speech signal transmitted from the central computer, synthesizing speech on site for the remote users. The transmission of speech data is made practical by the use of a compressed Linear Prediction (LP) encoding requiring much less channel bandwidth than straightforward LP representations, so that the signal can be transmitted over an ordinary telephone line. The MiniMISS system was designed and built by the Institute for Mathematical Studies in the Social Sciences (IMSSS) at Stanford University, for the purpose of exporting inexpensively to other locations the computerbased courses of instruction in mathematical logic and set theory which have been provided to local Stanford users for many years.
